There are more accurate and better written books out there. A much better choice would be " An unquiet mind " by Kay Jamison. I have heard her speak several times and her book is considered the most definitive about people with BPD and the people around them. I wish that I had gotten this book from the library, I have found it to be offensive in a number of ways, including the fact that she realizes things are going downhill when her nail polish is chipped. Pass on this one.
An enlightening account of the turmoil of living with a bipolar partner. The author States that it's hard to understand why a bipolar person would choose death to resolve a temporary problem. Bipolar is not a temporary problem. Once diagnosed, it becomes your affliction for the rest of your life. Sure, some chemical concoctions may make the day to day life more tolerable, but, the illness is still there masked to hide the unexplainable behaviors we try to keep in check.
a remarkably well written story of the impact of living with a significant family member whose mental illnesses were unknown at first; as the family attempted to cope with the impact of the illness and the stresses on the other family members, the reader becomes like another participant in the story. The author has interspersed helpful clinical and resource-related information at the beginning of each chapter to move the reader along so that the actual impact of living with someone with a mental illness is fully experienced.
This is a beautifully written, insightful, sensitive book about mental health's impact on individuals, families and descendants. KINK-FM News Director not only shares the journey her ex-husband went through, but also new information about treating brain disorders. This is a highly sensitive, personal book, written by a journalist (so it's a lovely read also). Highly recommend.
Have mental illness myself and try to read everything about it. Struggling and sometimes suffering from bipolar disease. Fascinated with the relationship between mental illness and inflammation. As I also have dial of MS another inflammatory disease.
I found All the Things We Never Knew is so powerful, I'm encouraging all my friends to read it. Here's what I said to them: "I've been TRYING really hard to not be THAT person with good intentions that everyone dreads, rolls their eyes at, or perhaps get offended by. I KNOW I have been that person sharing my passion for nutrition. Realizing I had been somewhat in your face, evangelical about it, I've taken it down a notch and have resigned to sharing my passion on my business page and on my Instagram account.THAT SAID, I'm going to risk having you roll your eyes again or maybe be offended but here's the thing, we are ALL affected in some regard by mental illness. Perhaps it's you, a loved one, an acquaintance, a co-worker, a patient, a client, a students, etc. We are ALL affected in some regard. In order to prevent unthinkable things from happening, I believe if we are all better educated about this, the better chance of a more positive outcome.I just finished reading Sheila Hamilton's new and POWERFUL book All the Things We Never Knew: Chasing The Chaos of Mental Illness. Sheila is an icon in the Portland community with an impressive background in all facets of journalism, she currently is the news director and morning show co-host of my favorite radio station, Kink.fm. I've been a fan of her for years and have watched her daughter Sophie grow up via Facebook for the last 5 years. I read this book in tears, sometimes sobbing (don't let that stop you, though...this is important!).I encourage everyone from middle school on up to read this. In my opinion, it should be considered mandatory reading in health class so students can perhaps recognize symptoms in themselves or at least have the knowledge as they move forward for themselves and/or their loves ones. All The Things We Never Knew reads like a novel, but it's all true and is the story of the family of one of my community members...it's utterly gut wrenching. Included at the end of each chapter is a well written, well organized section on mental health resources that are extremely valuable all on their own. This, my friends, is a must read!"
Sheila Hamilton has accomplished a tremendous task: piecing together the traumatic story of her husband's mental illness and writing the truth of her experience. It's hard to admit that you were in denial and missed some major signs. It's brutal to write about a beloved's spiral into madness before taking his own life. It's harrowing to chronicle a daughter losing her father. But Hamilton does all of these things with humility, grace and honesty. All The Things We Never Knew should be required reading for all families with someone suffering from bipolar disorder, or any mental illness for that matter.
Sheila was able to give a very personal and heroic insight into the pain, misunderstanding and revelation of her late husband's battle with his undiagnosed bipolar disorder, a battle of which he ultimately lost. My heart ached as I read this book but I couldn't t put it down. Her writing style and her authenticity drew me in. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to have some insight, understanding and empathy for anyone who suffers from a brain disorder.
